How is the IELTS writing band score calculated?
Examiners give each task a band on four equally weighted criteria: Task Achievement / Task Response, Coherence & Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range & Accuracy. The task score is the average of those four (commonly reported to the nearest half band).
Worked example for one task: TR 6, CC 7, LR 6, GRA 7 averages to 6.5. If your lowest criterion is a 6, that skill is what caps the task band — which is why targeted practice beats rewriting everything.
Your final Writing band then combines both tasks with Task 2 weighted twice as heavily as Task 1: (Task 1 + 2 × Task 2) ÷ 3, rounded to the nearest half band for practice planning.
