IELTS Speaking Band Score: Understand the Four Criteria
Understand what IELTS Speaking examiners assess and use a transparent practice report to find your next improvement. IELTSGRADER provides estimates for practice, not official scores.
Fluency & Coherence
Review pauses, development, organisation and how naturally your answer progresses.
Lexical Resource
Identify range, precision, collocation and whether your word choices support the answer.
Grammar
See how range, control and errors affect the clarity of your spoken response.
Pronunciation
Use transcript and timing-based delivery signals as a limited practice guide, not a retained-audio assessment.
How IELTS Speaking is scored
The four public IELTS Speaking criteria are Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Pronunciation. Examiners consider the performance across the speaking interview rather than rewarding memorised phrases in isolation.
A practice report can help you notice patterns between attempts. Treat the result as an estimated learning signal: it is aligned with public descriptors, but it cannot reproduce an official examiner decision.
What changes between a Band 6 and Band 7 response
- Band 6 answers can communicate effectively but may lose control during longer turns or abstract questions.
- Band 7 answers usually extend ideas more consistently, use vocabulary flexibly, and maintain clearer grammatical control.
- Higher pronunciation performance is about intelligibility and control, not removing a personal accent.
- The strongest practice loop is answer, review transcript, fix one priority, then answer a new question.
How it works
Record a complete answer
Practise the part and answer within its time limit instead of reading a prepared script.
Compare the four criteria
Use the estimated bands and transcript to find the criterion that most needs attention.
Repeat with a new prompt
Apply one change and test whether it transfers to a different IELTS question.
