Task 1 is different: Academic reports and GT letters need at least 150 words. Do not steal Task 2 time to pad Task 1 past ~180 unless Task 1 is unfinished.

What examiners actually penalise

Word count is not a separate criterion. It shows up inside Task Response.

• Under 250: You often under-develop ideas or skip a part of the question. Examiners can treat the response as incomplete.
• Barely 250 with empty sentences: “In conclusion, this is important for society” repeated does not buy Task Response marks.
• Very long essays: No automatic bonus. If the extra words add new, relevant support, fine. If they add repetition, off-topic stories, or grammar collapse, Lexical Resource and Grammar suffer.

Examiner-style view: a 240-word essay with clear position and two developed ideas can still look stronger than a 380-word essay that never finishes the second body paragraph cleanly. Length without development does not raise Task Response.

Under-length pattern (≈220 words — Task Response risk)

I agree that university should be free. Poor students cannot pay fees. If education is free, more people can study and get better jobs. Also, society needs skilled workers. In conclusion, free university is good for equality.

Clear opinion, almost no development. This is why “how many words” questions matter: short scripts usually fail the depth part of Task Response, not just a number on a counter.

Controlled Band 7-style length (≈275 words — one body only shown)

I partly agree that tuition should be free for students from low-income households, but not as an unlimited benefit for every applicant. When fees rise, first-generation students often leave higher education not because of ability, but because families cannot absorb the cost. For example, a student who must work full-time evenings to pay fees has less time for reading and coursework, which widens the achievement gap. That said, “free for everyone” still requires public funding, so governments usually need means-tested support and clear eligibility rather than an open door. A more realistic policy is generous grants for need, plus affordable loans for others, so access improves without removing all personal investment.

How to hit 260–290 under the clock

1. Plan 4–5 minutes: position + two body ideas + one example each.
2. Write body paragraphs first if you panic on introductions.
3. Count once at ~30 minutes, not every sentence.
4. If under 250 at minute 35: add one concrete example, not three new ideas.
5. If over 320 with 5 minutes left: write a short conclusion and stop editing vocabulary.

Does handwriting vs computer change word count?

On paper tests, examiners estimate length; they do not need a perfect count, but clearly short answers are obvious. On computer-delivered IELTS, a word counter may appear — still aim for quality in the 260–290 zone, not a race to 400.

Does the question prompt count toward 250?

No. Examiners count your response, not the printed task. Do not copy the question into the essay to inflate the total. A one-line paraphrase in the introduction is enough.

How examiners count contractions, numbers, and hyphenated words

There is no public official counting sheet for every edge case. For practice:

• Contractions such as don’t usually count as one word. Prefer full forms in Academic Task 2.
• Digits (1990, 25%) typically count as one word. Written-out numbers count as the words you write.
• Hyphenated compounds (long-term) are usually one word.

Do not spend exam minutes litigating the count. If you are clearly over 250 and the ideas are developed, finish the conclusion.

What happens above 350 words?

There is no automatic penalty for a long Task 2. The damage is practical: unfinished conclusions, repeated ideas, and more grammar errors. A clean 275-word essay beats a 400-word essay that never finishes. If the counter says 350+, cut examples that do not support the position.

Task 1 word count (the 150-word floor)

Academic reports and GT letters need at least 150 words. About 160–190 is enough if the overview or letter bullets are complete. Padding Task 1 past 200 usually costs Task 2 time — and Task 2 counts double. Use grade my essay if overview or tone is the real problem.
