Unpaid community service is sometimes proposed as a mandatory element of secondary education, on the grounds that it builds character and helps local organisations. I largely agree that schools should require a modest amount of structured volunteering, provided the work is meaningful and does not exploit students as free labour.

Compulsory service can develop practical social skills that classrooms alone rarely teach. When teenagers tutor younger children, support elderly residents, or assist at community events, they practise communication, responsibility, and teamwork under real conditions. These experiences also widen students’ understanding of people outside their immediate social circle, which matters in diverse cities.
