The bar chart compares car ownership among households in three countries in 2000, 2010, and 2020.

Overall, car ownership rose in all three countries over the period, but the scale of change differed. Country A and Country C saw substantial growth, whereas Country B started highest and increased only gradually. By 2020, Country A and Country B had similarly high ownership rates, while Country C remained the lowest despite clear improvement.

In 2000, Country B had the highest proportion of households with a car, at 65%, compared with 40% in Country A and just 25% in Country C. Over the next decade, Country A climbed to 55% and Country C rose sharply to 45%, narrowing the gap with Country B, which edged up only slightly to 68%.

By 2020, ownership in Country A had reached 70%, almost matching Country B at 72%. Country C continued its upward trend to 60%, yet it still lagged behind the other two. The most striking feature is therefore the rapid catch-up in Countries A and C, contrasted with the relative stability of already-high ownership in Country B.

Fix cards if your Task 1 is stuck at Band 6

Fix card 1: Write the overview before the details

After reading the chart for one minute, write two overview sentences with no more than one number (or none). Then write details.

Fix card 2: Group by story, not by year only

Instead of “2000 paragraph, 2010 paragraph, 2020 paragraph” with no thread, group by who changed most vs who stayed high.

Fix card 3: Replace repeated increase

Use climb, rise, edge up, grow and noun forms (growth, upward trend) where accurate. Keep degree words honest (slightly vs sharply).

Band 6:
