In Academic Task 1, candidates often lose Lexical Resource marks for one simple reason: they write increase and decrease eight times. Examiners have read thousands of scripts; repetition stands out.

This guide from IELTS AI Tutor by IELTSGRADER gives you precise trend language, example sentences, and a practice method so your overview and details sound controlled, not copy-pasted from a memorised list.

What “good” trend vocabulary actually means

Band 7 Lexical Resource in Task 1 is not about rare words. It is about:

  • Accurate verbs and nouns for direction and degree
  • Variety without forcing awkward synonyms
  • Collocations that match the data (rose sharply, not rose sharplyly)
  • Paraphrasing the rubric (the chart showsthe graph illustrates)

If you need a full model, see the Band 7 bar chart sample.

1. Verbs for upward movement

Neutral Stronger / more precise Example
increase rise, grow, climb Sales rose from 20 to 45.
go up edge up, inch up Prices edged up by 2%.
jump surge, soar Demand surged after 2018.
recover rebound After a dip, figures rebounded in 2020.

Caution: Soar and surge need a large change. Do not use them for a 3% rise.

2. Verbs for downward movement

Neutral Stronger / more precise Example
decrease fall, drop, decline Unemployment fell to 4%.
go down dip, slip Output dipped slightly in May.
drop sharply plunge, plummet Investment plummeted during the crisis.
reduce shrink (for size/amount) The gap shrank over the decade.

Caution: Plummet implies a dramatic fall. Match the visual.

3. Verbs for stability and fluctuation

  • remain stable / remain steady / stay constant, little change
  • level off / plateau, rise or fall then flatten
  • fluctuate, repeated ups and downs
  • vary, differences between categories (not always a time trend)
  • hover around, stay near a value with small movement

Example: After climbing to 60%, the proportion levelled off for the next three years.

4. Noun forms (essential for variety)

Mixing verbs and nouns lifts Lexical Resource:

  • a rise / an increase / growth / an upward trend
  • a fall / a decrease / a decline / a drop
  • a fluctuation / a variation
  • a peak / a low point / a high of X
  • stability / a plateau

Example: The chart shows a steady rise in remote workers, followed by a brief decline in 2021.

5. Adverbs and adjectives for degree

Small change Moderate Large / sudden
slightly, marginally, gradually steadily, moderately, significantly sharply, dramatically, steeply, rapidly

Adjective forms: a slight rise, a gradual decline, a sharp increase, a dramatic fall.

Example: Energy use increased only marginally, whereas transport emissions fell sharply.

6. Preposition patterns that sound natural

  • rose from 10 to 25
  • increased by 15 percentage points (not always “by 15%” if the chart shows points)
  • peaked at 80 in 2019
  • fell to a low of 12
  • remained at around 30
  • fluctuated between 40 and 55

Accuracy here also supports Task Achievement.

7. Comparison language (often missing at Band 6)

Trend vocabulary alone is not enough. Compare:

  • while / whereas: X rose, whereas Y fell
  • compared with / relative to
  • the largest increase / the most marked decline
  • twice as high as / three times higher than (check the data)
  • narrowed / widened (for gaps)

Example: Home broadband subscriptions rose steadily, whereas public phone booth usage declined throughout the period.

8. Overview phrases that avoid “increase/decrease” spam

Your overview should summarise main trends without listing every number:

  • Overall, X showed an upward trend, while Y declined.
  • The most striking feature is the sharp growth in…
  • X and Y followed similar patterns until 2015, after which their paths diverged.
  • Despite some fluctuation, the general trend was upward.

Save detailed figures for body paragraphs.

9. Topic-neutral sentence frames

Use these frames and swap in accurate verbs:

  1. X rose steadily from A to B between YEAR and YEAR.
  2. After peaking at A in YEAR, X fell back to B.
  3. X remained relatively stable, hovering around A.
  4. In contrast, Y experienced a sharp decline over the same period.
  5. The gap between X and Y widened considerably after YEAR.
  6. X overtook Y in YEAR, reaching a high of A.

Practise by rewriting one chart description three ways using different frames.

10. Words to use carefully (or avoid)

Risky choice Why Safer option
skyrocket often exaggerated rose sharply / surged
nosedive informal tone fell sharply / plunged
crazy increase informal dramatic rise
went higher and higher childish continued to climb
get bigger imprecise increased / expanded

Task 1 prefers clear academic description, not drama.

11. Mini model: same data, Band 6 vs Band 7 lexis

Data story: Coffee shop numbers in City A: 120 (2010) → 150 (2015) → 240 (2020). City B: 200 → 190 → 160.

Band 6 style:

The number of coffee shops in City A increased from 120 to 150 and then increased again to 240. In City B, the number decreased from 200 to 190 and decreased to 160.

Band 7 style:

City A saw steady growth in coffee shop numbers from 120 to 150, followed by a sharp rise to 240 by 2020. By contrast, City B experienced a gradual decline over the same period, falling from 200 to 160.

Same data; better variety and comparison.

12. A practice routine that sticks

Day 1–2: Build a personal list of 25 trend phrases in three columns: up / down / stable.
Day 3: Describe one line graph using no repeats of increase or decrease as verbs (nouns allowed once each).
Day 4: Add comparisons and an overview.
Day 5: Submit to an Academic Task 1 check via the essay checker (select Task 1) and note Lexical Resource comments.
Day 6: Rewrite only the overview and one body paragraph.
Day 7: Timed Task 1 (20 minutes) and compare repetition count.

For exam simulation with Task 2, use the mock writing test.

How your AI tutor helps with trend language

IELTS AI Tutor flags repeated verbs, imprecise degree words (skyrocket for a small rise), and missing overviews, all of which affect Lexical Resource and Task Achievement. Fix cards often suggest natural alternatives in context, which is more useful than a static synonym list.

Common Task 1 vocabulary mistakes

  1. Describing every year instead of selecting key trends
  2. Using percent and percentage points interchangeably
  3. Inventing reasons (because of the economy): Task 1 is description, not opinion
  4. Copying the question rubric word-for-word without paraphrase
  5. Mixing past and present tense randomly (match the time period on the chart)

Try this yourself

Prompt: Write five trend sentences for the same data using different precise verbs/adverbs — then check naturalness.

  1. Write under realistic time limits.
  2. Check your essay free (or the Task 1/2 checker if relevant).
  3. Rewrite only the lowest criterion once, then re-check.

Frequently asked questions

How can I describe increases without repeating “increase”?

Use rise, grow, climb, go up — but only when the meaning fits the chart.

Do dramatic words help?

Only if accurate. “Skyrocketed” for a small change hurts precision.

Should I memorise long synonym lists?

Practise in full sentences tied to real charts.
