Write at least 250 words.

Full sample essay (Band 6)

University education is very important for young people in today’s world. Many people argue that it should be free for everyone because education is a basic right and society needs skilled workers. I partly agree with this view, but I also think there are some problems if universities are completely free.

On the one hand, free university education can help students from poor families. If tuition fees are high, only rich students can enter good universities, and this is not fair. Free education gives everyone a chance to improve their future and get a better job. In addition, when more people are educated, the country can develop faster because there will be more doctors, engineers and teachers. For example, some countries that support students financially have a strong economy and a high level of knowledge in society.

On the other hand, making university completely free is very expensive for the government. The money for universities must come from taxes, and governments also need to spend on hospitals, roads and other public services. If all courses are free, some students may choose university even when they are not serious about studying, which wastes resources. Also, universities might become too crowded and the quality of teaching could fall. Therefore, free education for everyone may create new problems while trying to solve old ones.

In conclusion, I believe university should be more affordable, but not entirely free for all students. Governments can reduce fees or offer scholarships to those who need help, while students who can pay should contribute. This balanced approach is fairer and more realistic than making every course free.

Criterion scores (AI tutor view)

Criterion Band What the tutor sees
Task Response 6 Position is clear (“partly agree”) and both sides appear, but ideas stay general; examples are vague
Coherence & Cohesion 6 Standard four-paragraph shape; linking is safe but mechanical; paragraphs need tighter focus
Lexical Resource 6 Topic words are adequate; heavy repetition of free, university, education, students
Grammatical Range & Accuracy 6 Mostly accurate simple and compound sentences; limited complex control; few serious errors

Overall Writing impression for this Task 2 script: Band 6 (average of the four).

This is a common profile: communicative and organised enough for 6, but not extended or precise enough for 7. Compare the jump in Band 6 vs Band 7 Task 2.

Why this stays at Band 6

  1. Thin development, “some countries” and “better job” are not specific enough to lift Task Response.
  2. Repetition, key nouns recycle without paraphrase, which caps Lexical Resource.
  3. Safe grammar, accuracy is decent, but range does not show confident complex structures.
  4. Generic conclusion, restates the opinion without sharpening the argument.

None of these are “bad English.” They are Band 6 habits.

Fix card 1: Task Response: replace vague claims with concrete support

Weak (from essay):

For example, some countries that support students financially have a strong economy and a high level of knowledge in society.

Stronger Band 7 direction:

For example, where governments expand need-based grants rather than blanket free tuition, enrolment among lower-income students tends to rise without removing all cost signals that encourage course completion.

Practice drill: In your next essay, every body paragraph must include one specific mechanism (policy, group, or consequence), not “some countries” alone.

Fix card 2: Lexical Resource: break the repetition loop

Weak pattern: free / university / education / students repeated throughout.

Upgrade bank for this topic:

Repeated word Precise alternatives
free tuition-free, publicly funded, no tuition fees
university higher education, tertiary study, degree programmes
students applicants, graduates, learners from low-income families
important essential, decisive, high-stakes
problems drawbacks, fiscal pressure, unintended consequences

Practice drill: Rewrite one body paragraph using at least five alternatives from a topic bank, but only where meaning stays natural. See also lexical resource Band 6 to 7.

Fix card 3: Coherence: give each paragraph a sharper job

Weak topic sentence:

On the one hand, free university education can help students from poor families.

Stronger topic sentence:

The strongest argument for removing tuition fees is equal access for students who cannot borrow or self-fund.

Then keep the whole paragraph on access, and move funding problems to the second body paragraph only. That cleaner division improves Coherence without adding fancy connectors. For structured practice, use the 14-day Coherence plan.

Band 7 rewrite direction (opening + one body)

You do not need a perfect script to learn, you need a clearer target:

Whether higher education should be universally tuition-free is ultimately a question of fairness versus fiscal sustainability. I agree that cost should not exclude capable students, but I do not support making every degree entirely free regardless of need or course type.

Waiving fees can transform access for applicants from low-income households, who may otherwise enter work early to support their families. Targeted public funding, scholarships, income-contingent loans, or free tuition for shortage fields, widens opportunity while still rationing limited budgets. In that sense, affordability matters more than a single slogan of “free for everyone.”

Notice: clearer scope, more precise lexis, and development beyond a single claim.
