This Band 7 Task 2 sample shows what “good enough for 7” looks like in practice: a clear position, developed ideas, natural academic vocabulary, and controlled grammar, without needing rare words in every sentence. Annotations from IELTS AI Tutor by IELTSGRADER explain why each part works and what still separates Band 7 from Band 8. Full sample essay (Band 7)
Modern technology is woven into work, study, and daily routines, yet people disagree about whether it simplifies life or adds pressure. While digital tools can create new forms of complexity, I believe that, overall, technology makes life easier when it is used with clear boundaries.
Those who argue that technology complicates life often point to constant connectivity. Notifications, multiple apps, and endless online choices can fragment attention and make simple tasks feel busier than before. For example, arranging a meeting once required one phone call; now it may involve calendar links, message threads, and follow-up reminders across platforms. In addition, learning new software at work can feel like a second job, especially for people who did not grow up with digital systems. From this perspective, technology increases the number of decisions and skills required just to keep up.
On the other hand, technology removes friction from many essential activities. Online banking, navigation apps, and remote communication save time that previous generations spent travelling, waiting in queues, or posting documents. Students can access lectures and practice materials without living near a major library, and patients can book appointments or receive reminders that reduce missed care. These gains are not trivial: they convert hours of logistics into minutes. The key point is not that technology is perfect, but that it reduces effort for high-frequency tasks.
In my view, technology makes life easier in practical terms, but it can feel more complicated when users allow tools to dictate their attention. The same smartphone that simplifies travel planning can also interrupt deep work every few minutes. Therefore, the outcome depends less on technology itself and more on habits, turning off non-essential alerts, limiting multitasking, and choosing fewer apps that genuinely help. Used selectively, technology is a net simplification; used without limits, it becomes noise.
In conclusion, both views are understandable: digital life introduces new pressures, yet it also removes many traditional barriers. On balance, I believe technology makes everyday life easier, provided people manage their digital habits deliberately rather than accepting every new tool by default.

Overall impression: Band 7.

Introduction
Modern technology is woven into work, study, and daily routines, yet people disagree about whether it simplifies life or adds pressure.
Why it works: Paraphrases the prompt without copying. Sets up a discuss-both-views essay immediately.
While digital tools can create new forms of complexity, I believe that, overall, technology makes life easier when it is used with clear boundaries.
Why it works: Opinion is previewed early, helpful for Task Response, with a condition (clear boundaries) that the conclusion will echo.
View 1 paragraph
Notifications, multiple apps, and endless online choices can fragment attention…
Strength: Concrete mechanisms, not just “technology is stressful.”
arranging a meeting once required one phone call; now it may involve calendar links…
Strength: Before/after contrast develops the idea (Band 7 Task Response habit).
View 2 paragraph
technology removes friction from many essential activities.
Strength: Strong topic sentence with a precise collocation (removes friction).
These gains are not trivial: they convert hours of logistics into minutes.
Strength: Evaluative sentence that explains significance, more than listing benefits.
Opinion paragraph
The same smartphone that simplifies travel planning can also interrupt deep work…
Strength: Synthesises both sides instead of ignoring the opposing view. This is a Band 7 move on “discuss both views + opinion” prompts.
Conclusion
On balance, I believe technology makes everyday life easier, provided people manage their digital habits…
Strength: Matches the introduction’s position; adds the condition without introducing a brand-new argument.
What is still not Band 8
Band 8 scripts typically show:
- Even more precise and flexible vocabulary with almost no awkwardness
- Highly controlled complex grammar across the essay
- Ideas that feel insightful rather than solidly competent
- Cohesion that is subtle and effortless throughout
This Band 7 essay is clear and well developed, but a few sentences are still fairly general (patients can book appointments), and lexical resource, while strong, is not exceptionally wide. That is a healthy Band 7, not a failure.
Fix cards if you are aiming from 6 → 7 using this model
Fix card A: Give each view a real mechanism
Do not write “Technology is complicated because life is busy.”
Write what creates complexity (notifications, tool-switching, learning curves).
Fix card B: End body paragraphs with significance
After examples, add one sentence: why the example matters to the argument.
Fix card C: Make your opinion a synthesis
On discuss-both-views prompts, your opinion paragraph should weigh both sides, not pretend the other view never existed.

How IELTS AI Tutor uses annotations like these
In product feedback, annotations become fix cards tied to your sentences: undeveloped claims, mechanical linking, imprecise word choice, or grammar patterns. That is the difference between a score and a tutoring loop. Learn more on IELTS AI Tutor, or run a full timed set via the mock writing test.
